Somaliland and the UK Commit to Enhanced Cooperation

President Irro at meet with UK envoy to Somalia and Somaliland Amb Charles King at the Presidency in Hargeisa Somalilandsun: The President of the Republic of Somaliland, His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi (Irro), today received at the JSL Presidential Palace the Ambassador of the United Kingdom (UK) to Somaliland and Somalia, His Excellency Charles King, who is on an official visit to the country to enhance bilateral cooperation. The Ambassador was accompanied by senior officials from the UK office in the Republic of Somaliland. The meeting focused on important issues of mutual interest, building on the deep and long-standing relationship between Somaliland and the United Kingdom, which is based on peace, development, genuine cooperation and strategic partnership. The President of the Republic of Somaliland thanked the Ambassador for his visit to Somaliland. Similarly, the President thanked the British government for its historic role in supporting Somaliland, and noted that Somaliland is ready to further strengthen bilateral cooperation based on peace, development and shared interests. President Irro chairs a meeting between Somaliland and UK diplomats in Hargeisa The President of the Republic of Somaliland briefed Ambassador Charles King on the effective measures taken by the Somaliland government during its short term in office in the eastern regions of Somaliland; such as the nationalization of the civilian forces and their vehicles, ending the long-standing conflicts in the areas of Ceel Afweyn and the census, improving and increasing the salaries of various branches of the national forces. The President assured the Ambassador that the Somaliland government is committed to resolving the security issues in eastern Sool and Sanaag through dialogue and negotiation. The President said that from the day he was sworn in as president (12.12.2024), he declared an unconditional peace platform, established the National Peace Committee (JSL), and repeatedly reiterated the call for a peace platform, in order to end the conflicts in eastern Sool and eastern Sanaag through dialogue. Somaliland officials and UK diplomats pose at the Presidency in Hargeisa The President of the Republic of Somaliland told the British Ambassador that the Hassan Sheikh government has a major role in fueling the conflicts in eastern Somaliland, while hiding from the numerous problems facing his administration. The President of Somaliland has outlined the following objectives: 1. Working together for regional peace and security: The President of Somaliland underlined the role of Somaliland in regional stability, and noted the importance of supporting the efforts of the Somaliland Government to strengthen peace and stability in the region, in order to achieve lasting peace and political stability. 2. Strengthening and implementing the rule of law, justice and transparency in public administration to gain public trust. 3. Developing the economy and trade in the region. 4. Investing in and developing economic infrastructure. The Ambassador said that Somaliland, especially the Port of Berbera, has great economic potential.
